      Managing Lakes and Reservoirs
by Terrene Institute Staff and the North American Lake Management Society
North American Lake Management Society, 2001
Under the guidance of the Environmental Protection Agency's Clean Lakes Program, hundreds of North American lakes have been restored during the past two decades using the expertise contained in this manual. Designed for lake users and managers alike, from bait shop owners to limnologists, this new edition expands beyond restoration issues to focus on ongoing management of lakes and watersheds.
Arranged in three parts, in much the same order as most lake management projects, the manual is divided into the following major topics:
      • Understanding and Defining the Problem
      • Lake and Watershed Management Techniques
      • Developing, Implementing, and Evaluating a Management Plan.
The overall focus throughout is on water quality, with particular attention on the effects of inputs of silt, nutrients and organic matter.
      Estimating the Sedimentation Rate

"Although all water bodies fill with sediment over time, watershed activities -- primarily construction and agriculture -- can accelerate the infilling. Measuring the sedimentation rate is more important in reservoirs because they usually fill more rapidly than lakes. Occasionally, isolated areas in a like, such as deltas where streams enter, may be infilling at an un acceptable rate."

      Physical Variables
"This manual concentrates on how to determine what uses a reasonably managed lake can support," the editors explain.."It is critical, therefor, to decide the way your lake will be used and to have those goals clearly in mind as you delineate existing lake and watershed problems."
Browse our selection of new, used and out of print  natural history.       Although scientists and engineers will certainly find this manual useful, it is also written for and accesbile to informed citizens from all walks of life who are interested in protecting and managing lakes and reservoirs.
