Collared

When all the rhetoric is washed away and all the opinions and fears temporarily swept under the rug, wolves are wild animals, like mountain lions and bears, bobcats and coyotes. Just as the humans involved in the wolf debate deserve to be seen as individuals, not stereotypes, so do the wolves. They are not the bogeyman, or storybook monsters aiming to prey upon the young and old. They aren't cuddly pets or religious icons. They are Canis lupus. Wolves.

Politics and Personalities in Oregon's Wolf Country
by Aimee Lyn Brown
Oregon State University Press, 2013

Half a century after wolves were eradicated from Oregon under a federal mandate for their extermination, the first federally protected and reintroduced gray wolf  crossed the border from Idaho in 2000 and ignited a firestorm of public debate and vigilantism. By 2012, state officials counted seven distinct wolf packs in the state, numbering at least 46 wolves.

This book tracks the history of Oregon wolves from 1914, when Congress first appropriated money for their eradication, until the reintroduced species made its first confirmed livestock predation in Oregon 98 years later.

The author, Aimee Lyn Brown, was raised in the rural eastern side of Oregon where the wolves have infiltrated and the quarrels about their presence rage the hottest. She reports on the issue - interviewing biologists, ranchers, conservationists, lawyers and others - with admirable balance and restraint.
