Master Classes
Arts and Crafts

These sessions include pottery, glass blowing, basket weaving, photography, jewelry making, painting, metal working, and sculpture. Not only do they help the masters of each craft pay their bills, but they provide an invaluable forum for sharing ideas with fellow artisans and students. And, since arts centers frequently occupy imaginative quarters in a romantic settings, the workshops are something of a working vacation for everyone involved.

The Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts is located on 70 acres of wooded hills just three miles from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee. One- and two-week workshops are offered by prominent artists year-round. The fall 2008 program includes woodworking classes by Alf Sharp, basketry by Scott Gilbert, sculpture by Michael Warrick, raku by Harry Hearne, and textiles by Beth Nobles. Photography is an art form with  many practitioners, but few true masters. In the realm of nature photography, John Shaw is a member of  that class. His nature shots grace the pages of magazines like Audubon, Natural History and National Geographic. When he's not in the field, he conducts workshops at locations throughout the country. Recent locales included Sanibel Island in south Florida, the Saguaro National Monument in Arizona, Olympic National Park in Washington, and the Triple D Game Ranch in Montana.
