In Re-Engagement in Later Life: Re-Employment and Remarriage,
we are pleased to bring to public awareness two subjects that are
overdue as both topics of academic research and areas of practical
information: re-employment and remarriage of older people. Until
now, these topics have barely been explored.
|
Part
I, the study of re-employment in later life, was conceived and
carried out by Ruth Harriet Jacobs with support from the National
Institute of Mental Health. |
Part II, the study of remarriage, was conceived and conducted by Barbara Vinick and supervised by Ruth Harriet Jacobs.
Because of the obvious linkages, both theoretical and substantive, in
the issues concerning re-employment and remarriage in later life,
we felt it was useful to present the report of these studies in one
volume. Although retirement issues recently have become a
political issue of national interest, there has been little concern
with employment possibilities for people considered beyond
traditional working age. Remarriage among older people, with the
exception of one previous study by Walter C. McKain, has been glossed
over, possibly as being trivial or not worthy of serious attention.
