| Crossing
a raging river on horseback is never easy. Crossing in a horse-drawn
covered wagon is darn near crazy. Yet that's what 50,000 American
immigrants did in the 1840s as they traveled the Oregon Trail. |

At
Three Island Crossing in southern
Idaho, where the pioneers had to ford the mighty Snake River, area
residents and visitors gather in late summer for a re-enactment of the
worrisome passage. Riding horses and driving restored wagons, the
modern-day settlers parade along the southern bank of the river before
making a spectacular single-file crossing near the town of Glenns
Ferry. Families line the northern shore to watch the wagon train ply
the waters and cheer the adventurers home.

| Scheduled
for the second Saturday in August, the Three Island Crossing
celebration includes rliving history presentations and a historic
skills fair. It all takes place at Three Island State
Park, located about 70 miles southeast of Boise just off Interstate 84.
A $4 Day Use Vehicle Entry Fee is assessed per vehicle, per day. For
